NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 24, 2011) —The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s dam safety personnel report no affects at any of its projects from the earthquake that struck the east coast yesterday.
Jimmy Waddle, dam safety officer for the Nashville District, said his team has checked in with all of its projects, including those in eastern Kentucky, which are closest to the epicenter of the earthquake in Virginia.
"We have been in close communication with our personnel at Martins Fork Dam, Laurel River Dam, and Wolf Creek Dam," Waddle said. "Inspections of projects within or near the area of influence are routinely inspected after a seismic event. No project personnel reported feeling any ground motion and inspections have not turned up any issues."
At Wolf Creek Dam where a $584 million foundation remediation project is approximately 55 percent complete, officials there report no unusual readings during and following the earthquake from any of the more than 300 instruments that monitor the dam.
The comprehensive inspections have been conducted by the Corps of Engineers at the Nashville District’s dam structures, hydropower facilities, and navigation locks on the Cumberland River.
