How The Cumberland River Reservoir System Works

National Weather Service Nashville Weather Forecast Office in Mt. Juliet, Tenn.The local, state and federal agencies that partner with the Nashville District all bring unique expertise and contributions that are vital to the success of the overall water management mission.

The NWS Nashville Weather Forecast Office (WFO) works closely with the NWS Ohio River Forecast Center to develop flood forecasts and issue flood warnings. These forecasts predict water levels at established points along the Cumberland River and many of its tributaries by using a combination of observed weather and river conditions, rainfall predictions, and the Nashville District’s water management decisions.

The USGS coordinates closely with the Nashville District to provide long term resource monitoring of the region found within the Cumberland River Basin. This includes: research, data collection, data analysis, modeling, and decision support.

The TVA oversees the management of the Tennessee River by maintaining a channel for commercial navigation and flood damage reduction through coordinated operation of dams and reservoirs within the Tennessee River Basin
