    Division leadership program emphasizes ‘thinking regionally’

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 26, 2015) – “Thinking regionally” and understanding organizational structures, missions and leadership perspectives is why the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division’s Regional Leadership Development Program sent its participants to the Nashville District in Music City this week.

    COLUMBUS, Miss. (Feb. 6, 2015) – Thirty years after the dedication of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, officials cut another ribbon today dedicating a museum that provides education outreach and features the value of transportation within the historical inland passageway built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1972 to 1984.

    Agencies team up to reopen Chickamauga Lock

    HIXSON, Tenn. (Nov. 7, 2014) – Teamwork and a valuable dialogue between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District and Tennessee Valley Authority led to a quick repair action that reopened Chickamauga Lock this week to commercial barges and recreational vessels moving up and down the Tennessee River.

    Work crews assessed damage Oct. 31, 2014 on the upper gate anchorage at Chickamauga Lock. After a brief meeting with engineers, staff and several Tennessee Valley Authority officials, Lt. Col. John L. Hudson, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District commander gave the approval to reopen Chickamauga Lock to all navigation traffic as early as Thursday, Nov. 6.

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Oct. 31, 2014) – Work crews assessed damage at Chickamauga Lock and plan to reopen Chickamauga Lock to all navigation traffic next week.
  • The Wheeler Navigational Lock is dry this week as work crews begin to inspect and repair underwater components Oct. 28, 2014. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District employees dewatered the 51-year-old, 110-by-600-foot lock and closely inspected the 67-foot miter gates, culvert valves and all other areas of the lower lock chamber that are normally underwater.

    Maintenance makeover drains Wheeler Lock

    ROGERSVILLE, Ala. (Oct. 28, 2014) –The main Wheeler Navigational Lock is dry this week so work crews can inspect and repair underwater components.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2014) – An 1874 military map of Middle Tennessee and 1888 map of Muscle Shoals were recently restored and replicas of them are now being showcased in the Barlow Conference Room located at the headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A construction team at the Kentucky Lock Addition Project, which stepped up to manage the repair of a hydropower unit at Barkley Power Plant, received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Hedgehog Award Feb. 11 at the district’s headquarters.

Nashville District employees completed the Tow Haulage Unit Replacement Project on time at Kentucky Lock in Grand Rivers, Ky., Dec. 5, 2013, and the lock has resumed 24-hour operations. The new unit should move unpowered tows more efficiently and also eliminate a winter icing problem caused by the design of the 69-year-old tow haulage unit installed in 1944, according to Jeff Ross, Nashville District navigation chief.

    Kentucky Lock gets new tow haulage unit

    GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (Dec. 10, 2013) — U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District employees completed the Tow Haulage Unit Replacement Project at Kentucky Lock in Grand Rivers, Ky., Dec. 5, 2013. They finished the work on time and the navigation lock has resumed 24-hour operations.

The Pinta and her sister ship, Nina, are navigating up the Tennessee River via the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s navigation locks with visits to Lenoir City and Knoxville before heading downstream for stops in Alabama and Mississippi.     CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Oct. 22, 2013) -- Out of the darkness on Sunday evening, Oct. 20, 2013, what appeared to be two 500-plus year-old vessels quietly and slowly approached the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Chickamauga Lock.

    Seven workers pass scaffolding sections up the chamber side of Kentucky Lock’s lower miter gate Aug. 19, 2013. The wraparound scaffold is being assembled to permit TVA-contracted GUBMK Constructors to sandblast, make any needed internal structural repairs, and paint the 91-foot tall miter gates. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District employees dewatered the 69-year-old, 110-by-600-foot lock and will inspect the culvert valves and all other areas of the lock that are normally underwater for any needed repairs. Corps employees will also replace the tow haulage system, used to move unpowered sections of barge tows through the lock. Kentucky lock is scheduled to resume normal operation at noon, Sept. 24, 2013.

    GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (Aug. 19, 2013) – The 91-foot tall lower miter gates at Kentucky Lock was a beehive of activity today as workmen assembled wraparound scaffolding in preparation for making needed repairs on the gates.

    Nashville District celebrates its 125th Anniversary

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 15, 2013) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is celebrating 125 years of service to the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers Basins and to the Nation that began when the district was created Aug. 18, 1888 under the command of Lt. Col. John W. Barlow.

    USACE-TVA 80-year partnership a definite plus for Cumberland, Tennessee Rivers Basin

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 17, 2013) -- Although creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority by Congressional Act on May 18, 1933 relieved the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of most of its role in developing the economic potential of the Tennessee River and its tributaries, the Corps retained a development and operational role on the Cumberland River and its tributaries.

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Feb. 27, 2013) – A bank stabilization project on a 1,500-foot stretch along the Tennessee River at Moccasin Bend is nearing completion, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers employees are saving taxpayer dollars in the process.

    KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 3, 2012) – Several of the staunchest University of Tennessee Volunteers football fans from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District attended Military Appreciation Day at the game today and paid tribute to former district engineer and Vols coaching legend Brig.
