NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 12, 2011) – Memorial Day and boating season is fast approaching. With the warm weather, boaters are anxious about firing up the grill, setting up a tent with the family and getting out on the lake. Before launching a boat for the first time this season, take the time to check for all the required safety equipment, especially life jackets, and make sure all equipment is still in good condition.

To help focus on safe boating, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Safe Boating Council are partnering up May 21-27 for National Safe Boating Week to kick off the boating season and to promote water safety. At Center Hill Lake, the Corps rangers have several programs and activities planned during the week. Rangers and volunteers will be handing out water safety information and freebies at several boat ramps across the lake.

To ensure that National Safe Boating Week information and the water safety message is spread out to as many people as possible, two Corps of Engineers rangers and a Corps volunteer will host water safety presentations at Gordonsville Elementary, New Middleton Elementary, and Gordonsville High school. Another presentation will be hosted by Center Hill Lake for Capshaw Elementary School. Major boat ramps and recreation areas around Center Hill Lake will be staffed by rangers and volunteers to hand out water safety information May 21 to kick off National Safe Boating Week.

The rangers and staff at Center Hill Lake want visitors to have a safe and fun holiday weekend.

So when gearing up for the boating season, be sure to maintain the boat to safely operate. Always be mindful of water safety, not only during National Safe Boating Week, but throughout the summer. Remember, water safety starts with you.
