ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. (May 10, 2018) – Cheatham Lake Park Rangers celebrated the culmination of the “2018 Summer Pledge to Practice Water Safety” partnership today at Ashland City Elementary School, engaging students on the importance of water safety, learning to swim, swimming with a buddy, and how to pick the correct size life jacket.

The entire fourth grade signed a banner earlier this year signifying their pledge to always wear a life jacket around water, and today students learned from park rangers how important it is to stay safe at Corps of Engineers lakes, a lesson that will serve them well when they recreate this summer.

To celebrate the student’s pledge, Cheatham Lake park rangers provided students with their very own life jacket to ensure they will have a great summer out on the water.

“I know several of these kids and have coached them in junior pro football.  This makes it even more important for me to instill the value of always wearing your life jacket.  Having their own personal life jacket and ensuring that it fits well helps them start the summer recreation season off on the right foot,” said Park Ranger Dean Austin.

The Cheatham Lake Park Ranger staff looks forward to seeing all these kids out on the lake this summer.  Their commitment to water safety not only ensures they will be safe this recreation season, but also sets a good example to all the other kids in the local community.

Community involvement and youth education are essential elements to spreading the word about water safety at Cheatham Lake.  The event was made possible through a partnership established by Park Ranger Jack Roney and ACES administrators.
