NR 12-047: Nashville District launches new public web site today

Published Dec. 21, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 21, 2012) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is launching a new public web site today.  Although the site features an updated appearance, the Universal Resource Locator, or web address, remains www.lrn.usace.army.mil. The official switch will occur at noon central standard time, but it may take anywhere up to 24 hours for it to populate on servers for worldwide viewing.

The new web site is part of a Corps-wide web improvement project to give all websites similar look and feel and make it easier for the public to navigate and find desired content. On the back end of the site, it provides new tools for content managers to streamline workloads and to update and publish web sites, news, photos and video from any location worldwide.

“We’ve been working the past several months to build the new pages and add new information in an effort to provide relevant and interesting content to our audience,” said Bill Peoples, chief of Public Affairs.  “We will continue to enhance our pages as we move forward with the new site. I really think people are going to like how it is organized and the ease in which they can find information and interact with the district.”

The Nashville District took advantage of the web enhancement project to examine content and to reduce the footprint of the old web site that since the 90s had grown in size to more than 5,000 individual web pages.

“It was a huge project to take on.  More than 40 people across the district provided input and contributed to the many improvements,” said Lee Roberts, the public affairs specialist who coordinated the effort.  “They spent a lot of hours on this and they all deserve a lot of credit for enhancing how the public obtains information from us.”

People who have bookmarks to specific old public pages may have to reestablish links to the newer pages, but the good news is the new site is very easy to navigate, Roberts added.

The new district web site is built on the American Forces Public Information Management System, which is a robust tool used for managing public web sites within the U.S. Department of Defense and its branches. News stories, press releases, speeches, biographies, fact sheets, photos, slideshows and videos are just some of the content items publishable in AFPIMS.

The public can obtain news, updates and information from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District on the district’s website at www.lrn.usace.army.mil, on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/nashvillecorps and on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/nashvillecorps.
