NR12-038: Nashville District reducing hours of operation at three navigation locks

Published Sept. 17, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 17, 2012) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is reducing the hours of operation at three navigation locks effective Jan. 7, 2013.

The affected projects are Nickajack and Guntersville Navigation Locks on the Tennessee River and Barkley Navigation Lock on the Cumberland River.

The hours of operation are being modified from 24 hours per day to 20 hours per day. The hours of closure are 2 to 6 a.m. daily. Lockages started before the normal close of business will be completed before the lock is closed for the day.

The reduction in operational hours is the result of a Corps-wide effort to reduce operational costs and to increase funds available for maintenance requirements. This operational schedule has previously been successfully implemented at navigation locks on the upper Tennessee River with little disturbance to navigation traffic.

At this time no other Nashville District navigation lock is scheduled for changes in hours of operation.
