 Marion County Flood Preparedness

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS BUILDING STRONG®

AUTHORIZATION: Section 22 of the 1974 Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA), Planning Assistance to States, (PAS).

TYPE OF PROJECT: Flood Risk Management

LOCATION: Unincorporated Marion County, TN; near Jasper, TN

CONGRESSIONAL INTEREST: Dejarlais (TN-04), Hagerty (TN), Blackburn (TN)

NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: Marion County, TN

BACKGROUND:

Two streams were the source of flooding during several recent heavy rainfall events with the most destructive being on the evening of April 12, 2020. Owen Spring Branch flooded the community of Sequatchie, and Kelly Cove Branch caused damage to a local bridge. All of these events were predicated by periods of heavy rainfall which flowed from the mountain and ridge tops into virtually dry springs and branches, that are alluvial in nature, and have flooded areas well beyond the current FEMA designated floodplain areas. These two areas are a priority for study in the unincorporated portions of the county.

IMPORTANCE:

Marion County has known flooding issues from several tributaries that the County would like to study for flood preparedness. The Marion County Flood Preparedness study is an effort which includes hydraulic and hydrologic updates as well as provides an opportunity to determine what prevention measures can be put in place to eliminate or mitigate damage resulting from future flooding events.

STATUS: This project is expected to be complete by December 2022.
