Volunteer Couple wanted to provide visitor assistance at Holy Ground Battlefield Park, on weekends and holidays from April to September (Labor Day). Responsibilities would include greeting visitors; making routine patrols in the park; checking for minor violations; reporting maintenance problems; explaining the day use fee to boaters and swimmers, securing the park at closing. A Contract Park Attendant position is also available at this park. A campsite with power, water and sewage will be provided. A camper trailer or motor home is required for the position. Park Host - May 20, 2010 to September 10, 2010. Located 15 miles east of Fairbanks, Alaska. Park Host will have duties with visitor assistance, landscaping, litter pickup, mowing and maintenance of bulletin boards. Duties include assisting visitors by providing park/recreation information and distributing Title 36, park maps, and other informational handouts. The volunteers will assist the Ranger staff with a wide variety of other duties throughout the season. Park Host-
Volunteers needed for the summer recreation season. Iron Mountain Campground.  One (1) couple, 21 years or older with a safe, licensed, insured camping unit and vehicle.  Volunteers will staff registration booths for a minimum of 6 hours per day.  Volunteer park host couples will be working a rotating 3 day on/ 4 day off schedule.   Work period:  May 5, 2010 to September 10, 2010.  The duties of the volunteer in this area include gate attendance on a set schedule.  Park Hosts will collect campground fees utilizing the NRRS system.  General computer knowledge will be required.  Other duties include park surveillance, park patrol, reporting any problems to park rangers.   Volunteers must be bonded to collect fees.  Bonding costs will be paid by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Volunteers will live on-site and be available to answer questions, provide directions and other assistance.  A free full-service (water, sewer, electric) campsite will be provided.  Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period.  The volunteers will work a minimum of 18 hours per week.  Good communication skills are necessary.  Volunteer hosts do not enforce regulations; however, they are expected to be observant.  Volunteers must wear the volunteer uniform while performing volunteer duties.  Applicants should be physically capable of performing job.  Volunteers must have a friendly attitude with the public and portray a positive image of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Training will be provided.  Work will be performed according to safety guidelines provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. (Update 08/27/2009)

DeGray Lake
Cleaning Volunteer -
Volunteers needed to perform cleaning at Degray Lake from April 8, 2010 to September 30, 2010.
  Volunteer will perform light custodial duties to augment established O&M Contract such as sweeping, filling paper dispensers, and emptying trash cans in the restrooms, sweeping picnic shelter, picking up litter, light grounds maintenance such as picking up limbs from roadways and campsites.  All cleaning supplies will be provided.  A free campsite will be provided at the campground.  Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period.  The volunteer will work 4-5 days/week up to 20 hours per week.  Volunteers must provide a safe, licensed, insured camping unit and vehicle and be at least 21 years old.  Good communication skills are necessary.  Volunteer hosts do not enforce regulations.  Volunteers must wear the volunteer uniform while performing volunteer duties.  Applicants should be physically capable of performing job.  Volunteers must have a friendly attitude with the public and portray a positive image of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Training will be provided.  Work will be performed according to safety guidelines provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Winter Park Host/Volunteer-  Work period: September 01, 2010 –to April 30, 2011.  Multiple volunteers needed for the winter recreation season.  Volunteers will work a minimum of 20 hours per week on various assignments in exchange for free camping privileges.  Winter volunteer duties include fee booth operation, park surveillance, providing information on the Corps to visiting public, trail maintenance, updating bulletin boards, building bird nesting boxes, shoreline and park cleanup, and light maintenance activities.  Volunteers will be provided a campsite with water, electric and possible sewer hook-ups.  Sewer hook-ups are not guaranteed.  Volunteers will live on-site and be available to answer questions, provide directions and other assistance.  Volunteers must be bonded to collect fees.  Bonding costs will be paid by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Location: Volunteer position is located in Russellville AR. The population of Russellville is approximately 21,000. Lake Dardanelle has nearly 40,000 acres of boating and fishing waters and rimmed by choice picnic and camping areas, it is the ideal leisure-time destination. Two miles wide in places, it reaches 50 miles upstream to the Ozark-Jeta Taylor Lock and Dam and has 315 miles of shoreline. Russellville is located near the Ozark and Ouachita National Forests.

Environmental Stewardship Office Clerk - The Russellville Project Office is seeking a volunteer to perform minimal clerical duties. Some duties include filing miscellaneous documents, typing shoreline correspondence letters, answering phones, greeting walk-in visitors/customers, typing, and computer data entry. Work schedule would include 24 hours/week during any of which may occur Monday-Friday between 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. For your important volunteer contribution, the Corps will furnish a campsite in the park for a self-contained trailer or motor home with electrical (50 amp) and water. Occupancy of this site is limited to volunteers’ camping unit and personal vehicles only. Volunteer position may be year round.

Office Clerk Volunteer:  We have a volunteer position for a person to answer the phone, disseminate information about the McClellan/Kerr Navigation System (MKARNS), and parks to visitors. Volunteer must be proficient in Excel and Microsoft Office. Exam will be given. The desired employee must have good personal hygiene and appearance. The job is located at the Ozark Field Office in Ozark, AR. The work schedule is 8 hours /day on M, W, & F. The hours are 08:00 am. - 4:30 p.m. The office is located between Ozark and Altus, AR.

Orange Blossom Recreation Area – Volunteers are needed for three month terms between the months of September 30, 2009 to October 1, 2010. Volunteers ensure that the park entrance gate opens in the morning and is secured at sunset. They conduct periodic walkthroughs of the park, greet the public and answer questions. Volunteer park hosts do not enforce regulations; however, they are expected to be additional eyes and ears of the park rangers. Park hosts may be needed to assist during emergencies. Hosts are not required to do maintenance or janitorial functions, however litter pickup, when needed, is expected. Hosts days off are either Monday – Tuesday or Tuesday – Wednesday. Orange Blossom Recreation Area is a well known takeout point for river rafters, and authorized for day use only. No overnight camping is available for visitors. Orange Blossom Recreation Area has high visitation during the months of June through August, and   park hosts will be required to operate a no fee entrance booth for a five hour shift on Saturdays and Sundays. The fall and winter seasons see moderate to low visitation. In exchange for volunteer services hosts will be provided with, an RV site, electricity, water, and sewage at no charge. McHenry Avenue Recreation Area - Volunteers are needed for three month terms between the months of September 30, 2009 to October 1, 2010 for two separate host sites. Volunteer park hosts ensure that the park entrance gate opens in the morning and is secured at sunset. They conduct periodic walkthroughs of the park, greet the public and answer questions. Park hosts do not enforce regulations; however, they are expected to be additional eyes and ears of the park rangers. Park hosts may be needed to assist during emergencies. Hosts are not required to do maintenance or janitorial functions, however litter pickup, when needed, is expected. Hosts days off are either Monday – Tuesday or Tuesday – Wednesday. During the summer months McHenry Avenue Recreation Area is a popular day use spot with nine boat-in environmental tent camping sites. The recreation season, Memorial Day through Labor Day, can require park hosts to work one five hour shift per weekend in the parks entrance booth. Reservations and fees for camping are collected 14 days in advance by our Field Office Assistant at the Knights Ferry Information Center. (In the last 3 years the campground has not reached full capacity, so the host duties are primarily park host not camp host.) In exchange for volunteer services hosts will be provided with, an RV site, electricity, water, and sewage at no charge. The host is required to maintain a telephone at their own expense. Knights Ferry Recreation Area - Volunteers are needed for three month terms between the months of September 30, 2009 to October 1, 2010. Volunteer park hosts ensure that the parks two entrance gates are open in the morning and secured at sunset. They conduct periodic walkthroughs of the park, greet the public and answer questions. Park hosts are needed to staff the sites Information Center on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Park hosts do not enforce regulations; however, they are expected to be additional eyes and ears of the park rangers. Park hosts may be needed to assist during emergencies. Hosts are not required to do maintenance or janitorial functions, however litter pickup, when needed, is expected. Hosts days off are either Monday – Tuesday or Tuesday – Wednesday. The Knights Ferry Recreation Area is a popular put-in spot for river rafters, and authorized for day use only. No overnight camping is available for visitors. The community of Knights Ferry is rich in history, and the host site is in view of the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi River. The bridge is open to foot traffic only. In exchange for volunteer services hosts will be provided with, an RV site, electricity, water, and sewage at no charge. Docent, Knights Ferry Recreation Area – The Knights Ferry Recreation Area is the centerpiece of the Stanislaus River Parks system. It is the most popular of the 9 developed recreation areas. Rich in history, the Knights Ferry area is on the National Historic Registry. Docents assist park rangers giving interpretive programs about the Grist (flour) Mill, Mill Office, and the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi River, the Knights Ferry Covered Bridge. Knights Ferry’s history tells tales of the 49er era, Native American history, natural history, and pivotal assistance in the development of Stanislaus County. As the docents experience and knowledge increase they may be asked to give interpretive programs on their own. Other interpretive topics include the Life Cycle of the Chinook Salmon, Water Safety, Cleanup / Maintenance / Trail Maintenance, and Cultural / Natural History. (Updated 08/27/2009)

Eastman Lake is a trophy bass lake, popular for fishing, horse back riding and a quiet get away, but close to the metropolitan areas.  Yosemite National Park is 2 hours east of here, and Fresno is 1 hour south/west. The same visitors come back year after year. Eastman Lake provides tent camping, RV camping (electric or full hook up sites), group camping, and equestrian camping. All permanent park volunteers are provided with an electrical RV site (full hook ups are provided based on availability), laundry facilities, and reimbursement of fuel, including gasoline, diesel and propane. Cellular service is not reliable on project.

 

Chowchilla Day Use Area- Volunteers Needed Year Round. Volunteers shall complete 20 hours a week of site clean-up, brochure stocking, bulletin board updates, assist park staff, answer questions for the public, other duties as assigned depending on park needs, including light maintenance, installing park signs, trash pick up and inspections of facilities. Visitor Center - Volunteer needed from February 01, 2010 to December 31, 2010. The hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Volunteers are asked to meet and greet visitors at the Kaweah Heritage Visitor Center atop the Lemon Hill Recreation area at beautiful Lake Kaweah. Specific duties include the following: staffing information desk, greeting the public and answering questions, operating cash register, checking brochure supplies and restocking shelves, directing visitor activity and handling telephone requests, helping to organize and present interpretive Water Safety programs and Campfire programs, and other assigned duties. Park Host, Horsecreek Campground - 3 month increments,-Volunteer needed from June 12, 2009 to May 31, 2010, except when campground is closed due to high water levels (usually from May-July). Park hosts are expected to ensure park entrance gates open in the morning and secure gates at night. Conduct periodic walkthroughs of park, greeting public and answering questions. Park Host may be bonded in order to perform fee collection within the campground and remit camping fees to Nation Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) via computer. Some computer and cash register experience may be needed in order to perform NRRS operations. Park hosts do not enforce park regulations; however, they are expected to be the eyes and ears of the park rangers and are expected to assist rangers and visitors during emergencies. During the winter months, weekday visitation is low with moderate use during the weekend. During the fall and spring months, visitation is moderate during weekdays to occasionally heavy on weekends. During the summer months, visitation may be moderate to heavy during the weekdays and heavy on weekends. No maintenance functions are required, however minor litter pickup is expected. One camp site with full hook ups and phone line available for Volunteer Host. Horsecreek Campground is located 20 miles east of Visalia on State Hwy 198 and lies in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains not far from Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. Resource Management/Patrol - Projects/duties include: Assisting rangers in daily patrol by answering questions, providing crew assistance on boat patrol, installing or maintaining signs and bulletin boards, and stocking brochure boxes. Other duties may include performing trail patrol and maintenance, assisting in boundary inspections, checking for hazards to visitor safety and reporting such hazards to rangers. Participation in a variety of wildlife and resource management duties such as: creel census, bird observations, endangered species management, wood duck nest box monitoring and maintenance, vegetation plantings, erosion control measures, fence construction, campground maintenance, and other special projects.

About Lake Sonoma:  Nestled in the beautiful coastal foothills of Sonoma County, California, Lake Sonoma is surrounded by world famous vineyards and land that is rich in history. Created by the construction of Warm Springs Dam in 1983, the lake provides for flood control, irrigation and recreation.  The park has more than 17,000 acres to explore, including more than 47 miles of trails and when the lake is full over 50 miles of shoreline. Recreational opportunities include: hiking, biking, equestrian, boating, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, swimming, fishing and hunting to name a few.

 

Visitor Center Assistant Needed:  Works at U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, Lake Sonoma Recreation Area in Geyserville, Ca.  Volunteer is assigned to the Milt Brandt Visitor Center and the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery to perform the following work: Answer visitor's questions, explain park rules, regulations and provide any needed assistance. Presents short interpretive talks to campers, groups of visitors and school groups as needed. Roves and provides information in the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery.  You will operate cash register to make sales for the Friends of Lake Sonoma gift shop and other assigned duties.

 

REQUIREMENTS:  The volunteer must be able to absorb a great deal of natural and cultural history information and use that information when speaking to the public. All volunteers must be able to work with the visiting public and maintain a positive attitude. The volunteer will be provided on the job training and any required safety training necessary to help them carry out their duties. All volunteers are given an orientation to the park and provided with volunteer uniform components. Volunteers must wear a uniform when on duty and safety equipment as required by their duties. Use of the RV campsites will require a three month minimum commitment and at least three, eight hour days per volunteer, per week and please provide references from previous volunteer or work experience on the application.

 

COMPENSATION:  The Park has six RV campsites available – Year Round -with hook ups (water, electric [up to 30 amps] and septic). The RV pads are located in the Liberty Glen Campground a short drive from the visitor center. The RV site does have a phone line that the volunteer can use to set up local phone service. Pets are allowed but must be under control, on a 6’ leash at all times and be non-intrusive to others and wildlife. A 15% discount is granted in the Friends of Lake Sonoma book store.  No monetary compensation is available for these volunteer positions. (Listed 11/09/2009)

Volunteers are needed from February 15, 2010 through December 31, 2010 for a plethora of "hands on" projects throughout the Pine Flat Lake area. Duties include litter pickup along the shoreline, painting sign posts and handrails, assisting Park Rangers on boat patrol with Floating Restroom cleanup, shoreline debris removal and buoy maintenance. Each volunteer is asked to perform 20 hours a week. In exchange, volunteers will be provided tools, supplies, fuel and full hookups (not including phone line). Camp Ground Maintenance Volunteer-
Volunteers needed from April 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010, to assist with light maintenance and repairs throughout two campgrounds and several day use areas. Duties may include campground cleanup, simple plumbing or carpentry, painting, sign installation, restroom cleaning, trail inspection/repairs, tree planting and other similar light maintenance. In exchange for their services, campground volunteers are provided a RV site with water, sewage and electric service. (Telephone service is not a guaranteed service but may be available at volunteer's expense). A similar position may also be available during the off-season, beginning October 1, 2008. Visitor Information Specialist / Tour Guide : This volunteer can be individual adult or couple, retired.  Position begins May and runs through September.  The overall purpose of this volunteer position is to assist the Interpretive Park Ranger with the operation of the South Platte Visitor Center.  Specific duties include the following:  performing information (lobby) desk duties, greeting the public, answering questions, direction visitor activity and handling telephone requests.  Conducting formal and informal talks and tours at and around the South Platte Visitor Center on a variety of subjects.  Performing routine maintenance on audio-visual equipment and cleaning displays.  Preparing general information mailing packets and assisting with related correspondence and bulletins.  Checking brochures supplies and restocking shelves.  Operating project radio and telephone equipment.  Making recommendations to the Interpretive Park Ranger regarding all aspects of the South Platte Visitor Center operations.  Performing other related duties as outlined by the Interpretive Park Ranger.  (Updated 08/27/2009)

Park Host Needed - We are looking for two energetic and fun couples to staff a fee collection booth from approximately mid May to mid September 2010.  Duties include collecting fees, answering visitor’s questions and being the first friendly face that our visitor meets.  We are asking each couple to volunteer 20 hours of time during the weekday.  The specific days will be negotiable, and can be consecutive or spaced apart.  In return for 20 hours per week, we will provide a maintained site which includes electricity, water, sewage, trash and internet.

Trail Maintenance  - Year-Round. Volunteers complete maintenance concerns around the project by weeding flower beds, planting trees, installing wildlife boxes, and general maintenance. Volunteers also maintain established trail shelters located around Lake Okeechobee by mowing, trimming, cleaning fire rings, picking up litter, and general maintenance of the shelters. Clark Creek South Boat Ramp - Located approximately 7 miles from downtown Acworth, Georgia.

Volunteer Park Hosts Needed: Two Couples, 21 years or older with a factory built, self-contained, camper trailer or motor home at least 28' long. No other persons can live with the volunteer couples during the volunteer period. Two pet limit, however no vicious pets. Volunteer Park Hosts will work a rotating four-day on four-day off schedule and  will be responsible for; park surveillance; user fee compliance; and performing park patrols beginning March 15 through November 30, 2010.  Will accept volunteer couples for a minimum of three months (March 15 through May 31; June 01 through August 31; September 01, through November 30); for six months, or for nine months. Boat ramp gates are open seven days a week. Volunteer Park Host will patrol boat ramp every three (3) hours to check for fee compliance and issue user fee envelopes; check for minor violations, such as pets off leash and parking on grass; and report vandalism and maintenance problems to Project Management Office. Twice daily Volunteer Park Host will patrol Clark Creek South Campground which is closed.   During the period of May 15 thru September 6, park hosts if on duty on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays will operate the gatehouse from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. for traffic control purposes however, Volunteer Park Host will not collect user fees. Clark Creek Boat Ramp Area has a launching ramp with 45 parking spaces. Total round trip tour of ramp is .5 mile and round trip of campground is 4 miles. A campsite (located adjacent to the boat ramp inside the campground) will be provided with 50 amp electricity, water, sewage, and restricted-use telephone line. Volunteer must provide the physical telephone to connect to Corps telephone line.  Average 25 hours of volunteer work per week. DAY USE FEE COLLECTOR VOLUNTEER

Volunteer Work Period: 15 May - Mid September 20010

Job Description: The Day Use Fee program at Lake Red Rock includes collecting fees at two beaches and five boat ramps. The volunteer will be required to become bonded and will be reimbursed for the cost of the bonding. The duties of the volunteer include collecting fees at the North Overlook Beach booth as well as retrieving self-depository boxes from the beaches and the boat ramps around the lake. The self-depository boxes will then be transported to the project office to be counted with a Corps of Engineers employee. The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while performing volunteer duties. FIFIELD RECREATION AREA VOLUNTEER

Work Period: April 10 - October 12, 2010

Job Description: Fifield Recreation Area is a scenic picnic area with four shelters, two restrooms, a playground, and a Volksweg Trail trailhead. The duties of the volunteer in this area include cleaning the restrooms and shelters, removing trash, picking up litter, opening the park entrance gate and restroom buildings by 8:00 a.m., and mowing and trimming the grass. A John Deere tractor mounted mower and string trimmer with fuel and supplies will be provided by the Corps of Engineers. The Fifield Volunteer will also be responsible for cleaning the restroom at the Marina Cove, and emptying the trash receptacles. A John Deere Gator 4-wheel vehicle will be supplied for transportation from Fifield to the Marina. All of the cleaning supplies will be provided. A free full-service site is provided in the Fifield Recreation Area and the area is gated from 11:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. Job Description: The Whitebreast Beach area includes an enclosed shelter house (Miner's Retreat), picnic tables, two vault toilets, a day use fee booth, a beach change/shower building and a beach. The duties of the volunteer in this area include cleaning the Miner’s Retreat shelter, completing pre and post inspections for special event permits at the Miner's Retreat shelter, cleaning vault toilets, cleaning the beach change/shower building, removing litter from the beach, removing trash from trash cans in the area, opening the beach entrance gate and change/shower building by 8:00a.m., and collecting fees at the day use fee booth. The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while performing fee remittance duties. The volunteer will also be required to become bonded and will be reimbursed for the cost of the bonding. All of the cleaning supplies will be provided. Hosts will staff campground registration booths from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and greet incoming campers, answer questions regarding the National Recreation Reservation Service and provide visitors with other miscellaneous lake information. Volunteers will not collect money, but will provide information during the fee contractor's break period. A free campsite with electricity will be provided to the volunteer during their work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. The volunteer will work five days a week with two days off in the middle of the week. Good communication skills are necessary. WHITEBREAST LIGHT MAINTENANCE VOLUNTEER

Work Period: April - September

Job Description: Whitebreast Campground is a large scenic campground with a boat ramp, five shower buildings, four picnic shelters, six vault toilets, a youth camping area and one fish cleaning station. The duties of the volunteer in this area include cleaning out fire rings within the Whitebreast Campground and Youth Camp using a John Deere Gator 4 or 6-wheeler, performing custodial duties at the Whitebreast Youth Camp, performing custodial duties at the Whitebreast Campground area on Tuesdays and performing light maintenance duties at all Corps Recreation Areas as assigned. Custodial duties for the campground will include cleaning the five shower buildings, six vault toilets and the fish cleaning station. The volunteer will not be responsible for removing garbage from the garbage cans at the campsites. Mileage will be reimbursed for travel to other recreation areas to perform light maintenance duties (staining picnic tables, painting water fountains, etc.). The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while performing light maintenance duties. A free full-service campsite is provided at the Whitebreast Campground during the volunteer’s work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. TRAIL MAINTENANCE VOLUNTEER

Volunteer Work Period: Early May through September

Job Description: Lake Red Rock has a 10 mile asphalt trail, Volksweg Trail, which winds its way from below the Red Rock Dam, along the north side of Lake Red Rock and ends at the Fifield Recreation Area. Trail maintenance will consist of but not be limited to picking up trash on or along the trail, clearing all rocks, pebbles, acorns, sticks, etc. from the paved trail surface. Volunteer will utilize a mechanized trail sweeper and/or leaf blower (provided by the Corps of Engineers) to accomplish the majority of work; however, the volunteer will also need to sweep away debris by hand when the mechanized equipment is unable to remove it. In addition, the volunteer will also be responsible for cleaning fire rings in the recreation areas along the trail route (Howell Station, North Overlook, Wallashuck and Ivan’s Campgrounds). A free full-service campsite in Howell Station Campground (site 22) will be provided during the volunteer work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. The volunteer will work five days a week with two days off in the middle of the week. Good communication skills are necessary. Job Description: Volunteer will be responsible for maintaining the butterfly garden and other flower beds surrounding the visitor center and administrative office. Tools will be provided by the Corps. Duties will include weeding, fertilizing, thinning, deadheading, mulching and watering the flowers and other vegetation, and planting new plants as needed (plants purchased by Corps). The work schedule is flexible, but will be discussed with the volunteer coordinator prior to beginning work. Note: No free campsite is provided with this volunteer position. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Good communication skills are necessary. Volunteers will wear provided volunteer uniform while performing volunteer duties. NEST BOX VOLUNTEER

Duration of Work: April - August

Job Description: Volunteer will be responsible for maintenance of bluebird nesting boxes located throughout the lake area, and two purple martin houses located in the North Tailwater and South Tailwater Recreation Areas. Volunteer will prepare structures for nesting of target species, document findings on nesting success and make repairs or replace structures as needed. A free full-service campsite in Wallashuck Campground (site 51) is provided during the work period. The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while performing nest box duties. Volunteer must have some knowledge of eastern bluebird and purple martin habits. Volunteers must also provide their own transportation to and from each nesting site. Volunteer capable of minor woodworking skills is preferred. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. Good communication skills are necessary. Volunteers must provide a safe, licensed, insured camping unit and vehicle and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers will wear provided volunteer uniform while performing volunteer duties. Job Description : Wallashuck Campground is a medium-sized, scenic campground with eighty campsites, three shower buildings, one vault toilet, a picnic shelter, fish cleaning station and a boat ramp (used only at high water levels). The Wallashuck Custodial Volunteers will perform the following duties: clean the shower buildings and restrooms, dump station, vault toilet, picnic shelter and the surfaces of the fish cleaning station. The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while performing custodial duties. All cleaning supplies will be furnished by the government. A free full-service campsite is provided at the Wallashuck Campground during the volunteer’s work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. The volunteer will work five days a week with two days off (determined by the volunteer coordinator). Good communication skills are necessary. The duties of the mowing volunteer will be to provide mowing services and dump the fish cleaning station garbage. A John Deere tractor mounted mower with fuel and supplies will be provided by the Corps of Engineers. Garbage bags (for the fish cleaning station) will also be provided by the government. The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while performing volunteer duties. A free full-service campsite is provided at the Wallashuck Campground during the volunteer’s work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. The volunteer will work five days a week with two days off (determined by the volunteer coordinator). Good communication skills are necessary. Volunteers must provide a safe, licensed, insured camping unit and vehicle and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers will wear provided volunteer uniform while performing volunteer duties. The Wallashuck Trimming Volunteers will perform the following duties: trim all weeds and grasses in the Wallashuck Campground, clean the shower buildings and restrooms on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and performing light maintenance duties at Corps Recreation Areas as assigned. The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while performing custodial duties. A string trimmer with fuel and supplies and all cleaning supplies will be furnished by the government. A free campsite with electricity, the ability to fill with water close-by and a 40-gallon tank tote will be provided at the Wallashuck Campground (site 60A) during the volunteer’s work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. The volunteer will work five days a week with two days off (determined by the volunteer coordinator). Good communication skills are necessary. Job Description: Ivan’s Campground is a popular riverside campground with 22 campsites, one shower building, and a fish cleaning station. The Ivan’s volunteer will perform the following duties: clean the shower building, clean the fish cleaning station, empty the trash from 23 garbage cans, mow and trim approximately 3 acres of lawn in the campground, clean water fountains, and collect camping fees. A John Deere tractor mounted mower and a John Deere Gator 4 or 6-wheeler with fuel and supplies will be provided by the Corps of Engineers to perform mowing operations and haul trash to the South Tailwater dumpsters. The volunteer will be required to become bonded and will be reimbursed for the cost of the bonding. The volunteer will be required to track their mileage to be reimbursed for travel while retrieving cashier’s check for camping fee remittances. A free full-service campsite will be provided at the Ivan’s campground during the volunteer’s work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. Mehaffey Boat Ramp Host-
Volunteer Work Period: May 17, 2010 to September 1, 2010.
VOLUNTEER COUPLE wanted to provide visitor assistance at Mehaffey Boat Ramp on Saturdays, Sundays & holidays from May 17th through Labor Day weekend, September 4th. Responsibilities include:

greeting boaters and visitors as they enter the area

providing self-registration envelopes to boat ramp users

giving directions on where to park

explaining the day use fee when necessary

Mehaffey boat ramp is a four lane ramp and very busy on weekends. There are approximately 140 parking spaces on the ramp side of the road. Overflow parking is available across Mehaffey Bridge Road. The work is physically demanding in that volunteer(s) will be on his/her feet for extended periods of time assisting users and visitors. Volunteers should be capable of doing a great deal of walking on a large blacktop parking area that is exposed to the sun. LOCAL COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

Volunteer work period: Early May through Labor Day Job Description: Volunteer from the local community (not camping at a Corps park) will staff the Coralville Lake Visitor Center at least three hours per week from 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Tuesday evenings). Primary duties will include greeting visitors and running the weekly free movie. Training will be provided for operating the equipment. Another duty will be popping pop corn and bagging it for the visitors.

 

Other miscellaneous duties may include answering questions about the lake area, performing visitor surveys as needed, assisting ranger staff with groups participating in interpretive programs, performing light maintenance, selling books and other items from the visitor center cooperative store, and performing other miscellaneous duties as needed. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. Good communication skills are necessary. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the Visitor Center at the lake and be at least 18 years old. The primary duty of a Natural Resource/Habitat Enhancement Host is to help improve overall park aesthetics by performing/assisting in day to day and seasonal management activities, while promoting native landscape species. Knowledge of pruning methods, tree care and use of chemicals is preferred, but training is available. The primary duty of Bluebird Next Box Monitors is to monitor 6-12 bluebird boxes as assigned around Saylorville Lake. The boxes should be checked at a minimum of once a week April-August. Volunteers keep a log of the activity at each box, these records and volunteer hours should be turned in to the Bluebird Volunteer Coordinator each month. Volunteers are responsible for all transportation and transportation costs associated with their position.  This includes having access to a reliable licensed vehicle, fuel, valid vehicle insurance, and a valid driver's license.

Park Maintenance -Rathbun Lake is looking for  Park Maintenance Volunteers to perform light duty maintenance and resource management work items in our park areas on a very flexible schedule.  We are looking for energetic applicants that would love to work in a campground setting, with no weekend work. We currently have two Park Maintenance positions available at Corps parks around the lake.  Examples of our light duty maintenance work include:  picnic table board replacement, staining and painting of facilities.  Resource management examples include:  removal of tree suckers and trimming of tree limbs. Recreation examples include:  shoreline and park area litter pickup, bulletin board material posting, and sign installation.  All required supplies and tools will be provided by the Corps of Engineers.  Volunteers will be responsible for their own transportation and personal protective equipment.  We require our volunteers to work only 16 hours per week in exchange for an electric campsite.  Volunteer positions are available for a one month rotation or longer during recreation season depending upon work items and volunteer waiting list.  Our recreation season runs from April 15, 2010 to October 15, 2010. Volunteer Park Attendants for Dent Acres Campground:

Enjoy the spring or fall in beautiful northern Idaho. Dent Acres is a full service campground with 50 campsites, a boat launch ramp, playground and restroom with showers. The lake offers nearly 54 miles of fishing and boating opportunities. Spring opening: Two couples needed from April 1 to May 21, 2010. Fall opening: Two couples needed for September 4 to November 25, 2010. Work is a minimum 30 hours per week, with most duties between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, with no significant physical and mental condition that would prevent the volunteer from carrying out these duties. Volunteers live on-site and answer visitor questions, provide directions and other assistance, explain fee payment procedures and educate visitors about campground rules.   Will assist park staff with minor projects such as painting, pruning brush and or trees. Volunteers do not perform skilled maintenance duties or perform janitorial services. Full service campsite provided for no charge (water, sewer, electric service with 50 amp maximum. Volunteers provide their own RV or trailer (sites can accommodate 35 foot trailer). Volunteer needed at Mack's Creek Park from approximately April  1, 2010 to October 30, 2010. Mack’s Creek is a non-fee boat launch facility with approximately 15 associated primitive non-fee day-use and/or short-term camping sites and is the only vehicle-accessible camping area at Lucky Peak Dam & Lake. Duties primarily include regular meet and greet with park visitors to provide information assistance, obtain basic registration information and to maintain a helpful overnight weekend presence in the area. A 4-wheel motorized Kawasaki "Mule" can be provided to facilitate these efforts. Additionally, this position will include minor litter pick-up, light grounds maintenance such as tree and brush trimming or tree and shrub watering, and any other light maintenance projects you may wish to carve out for yourself! Past Volunteer Hosts have been reimbursed fuel expenses to/from your current address to Boise, ID, daily incidental expenses, and mileage reimbursement to/from Boise for weekly laundry services. The Host Site is slightly removed from the park and includes a new 14' steel shade shelter and concrete pad, phone service, sewage hook-up, 50-amp generator-supplied service, and a securable storage shed. Park staff transfers you potable water by portable tank. Lucky Peak Dam & Lake is the Gateway to the Boise National Forest for the Boise urban area (~400,000 people). 15 minutes from downtown Boise, we are the nearest lake recreation for area residents. Cleaning Volunteer- This position could require the cleaning of comfort stations, shower houses, picnic shelters, and litter pickup depending on the campground facilities. This work can be divided into two tours: one for the weekend (Saturday – Sunday) and the other is for weekdays (Monday – Friday). The purpose of this schedule is to divide the workload so that no one has to work more than approximately 20 hours per week.

There may be the opportunity for two volunteer couples to share the cleaning and mowing work. A campsite will be provided to volunteers that include water, sewer and a 50 amp electrical hook up. All campground rules and regulation will apply to volunteers while staying in the campgrounds. The campgrounds will be open from May 1 to September 2, 2010. Camp Host - The Camp Host will have duties in visitor assistance and facility maintenance.
Campground surveillance will be primarily on the weekends (Friday night, Saturday day/night, Sunday day). A register of camper occupancies dates and tag numbers will be recorded by the Camp Host(s) and given to the Rangers on a weekly basis. Volunteer Coordinator / Honor Camp Work Crew Supervisor - March 1, 2010 to November 30, 2010. Park Host/Water Safety - May 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010.  Park Host will have duties with visitor assistance and water safety. Duties include assisting campers by providing lake information and distributing Title 36, Lake Maps, and Water Safety Material. Volunteers may also staff the Visitor Center during peak hours and provide information to visitors in person and over the phone. Volunteers will update/maintain the existing bulletin boards by adding new material and making minor structural repairs. The volunteers will also perform courtesy vessel inspections at boat ramps and assist the Ranger staff with on the water vessel inspections. Volunteers will take photographs of visitors and wildlife, and may be asked by the staff to assist with various light duty tasks.

Park Maintenance– May 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010. Volunteers will perform various light duty maintenance work to include: painting, staining, light carpentry work (repair/replace rotted or damaged boards on bulletin boards and picnic tables). Minor landscaping to include: pruning, weeding flowerbeds, planting and watering trees/shrubs, etc.  Maintain existing trails by removing litter and encroaching vegetation using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, loppers, and handsaws. Some duties will be performed alone or with the Maintenance or Ranger staff. Volunteers will be provided with all required supplies and tools to complete the assigned jobs. Volunteers are required to provide 20 hours of week service for a full service campsite, which includes 50 amp electric, water, and sewer. Park Camp Host March 30, 2010 to November 3, 2010. This position is located at Pearson-Skubitz Big Hill Lake, Kansas in the Timber Hill Campground. This campground includes 20 campsites and is located on the East-Central area of the lake. Big Hill Lake is located within Labette County in Southeast Kansas. The land consists of rolling hills covered in cedars, oaks and other hardwoods. Predominate wildlife species include the Eastern Wild Turkey, Whitetail Deer, Bobcat, Coyote and other small mammals such as Raccoon, Opossum and Armadillo. These species can easily be viewed by the watchful eye. Fishing on Big Hill Lake is top of the class. Big Hill is host to many tournaments throughout the spring and summer months. The volunteer will be provided a full service (50 amp, sewer, water, local phone access & internet) site near the entrance to the campground and boat launching facility. A mail box is also available for mail pick-up at the site. Other amenities include a small storage shed and an area for a garden. As an important part of Big Hill’s visitor assistance program the volunteer will welcome visitors and provide information regarding fees, rules, regulations, and other general park information.  The volunteer will monitor park activities and contact a park ranger if problems are observed. Other duties will include basic maintenance tasks, roadside litter pickup, sign maintenance, cleaning of fire rings, and fee compliance checks within campground area. Camp Host/Custodian - The primary duty of the camp host/custodian is to provide visitor assistance duties for the visitors.  The volunteer will collect camping fees, hand out information to the public, clean the restrooms, shower building, and fire rings for a park with 32 campsites.  The volunteer will be responsible for keeping the campground tidy and oversee daily operations of the park in exchange for a full utility campsite.  The volunteer will be required to serve for the entire recreation season May through September.  Visitor Center Lawn Care -The lawn care volunteer will be responsible for maintaining the yard area around the Corps of Engineers Administrative Office.  Duties include mowing, trimming, and fertilizing the lawn.  Maintaining shrub beds, mulching, and weed control will also be the responsibility of the volunteer.   The volunteer must be available from May through September for a 20 hour work week.  A full utility campsite will be provided to the volunteer.  A weekly work schedule will be determined with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Campground Host – Enjoy the summer season from May 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2010  in beautiful North central Minnesota at a 119 site, full amenity campground which opens to the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. 1 couple, 18 years of age or older needed to provide information and answer questions on campground policy and Corps regulations to the public, assist park visitors during weather related emergencies, monitor park activities while COE staff is off duty, operate a two way radio, record daily traffic counter and visitation numbers, maintain current information on park bulletin boards and re-supply day use fee information and materials. Other light maintenance duties include pickup of miscellaneous trash throughout the park, clean up of campsites for incoming campers and repapering of privy’s and comfort stations. Corps of Engineers will provide all supplies to complete duties. Enthusiasm, a courteous and friendly attitude and good communication skills are highly important. In exchange a 30-amp campsite with water and sewer hookup will be offered and the use of all campground facilities and amenities.

Volunteers are needed to perform minor recreation area  maintenance to include: : removing ashes from fire pits, picking up miscellaneous litter from the campground and day use areas, cleaning the picnic shelter and minor miscellaneous projects depending up on skills.  All supplies will be provided to complete these duties including personal protective equipment.   Approximately 21 hours per week.  One position is available for the month of April 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010.  A friendly attitude, willingness to work with others and good communication skills are required.  Volunteers will be provided a campsite with electricity and the use of all facilities and amenities. Downstream Campground Maintenance -

Dates:  May 1, 2009 – October 26, 2009 and May 1, 2010-October 26, 2010

Schedule is fifteen hours per week working Monday through Friday. Work is to be conducted between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30 pm. Work hours  are flexible in that if the volunteer desires they may complete all of the required hours in two days of work. DUTIES: Assist Natural Resource Specialists in sustaining the natural resources at the downstream campground and Kiwanis Park and enhancing the aesthetics for our visitors. Some of the daily work requirements may include ; Planting, mulching, fencing, watering and pruning trees; weeding planter boxes and caring for flowers and plants; Irrigation of grounds; picking up tree limbs; constructing, placing and stocking bird houses; Washing, painting and staining dilapidated, dirty and faded facilities. SKILLS: Need the suitable skills to accomplish all of the duties above. Ability to read and write and keep a daily log of accomplishments and hours worked. COMPENSATION: Volunteers provide their own self contained motor home or camping trailer. A personal vehicle that can run separately from the camping unit is most convenient. One site with electric, sewer and water hookups can be provided from September 7 to October 26. A standard site with electricity will be provided from May 1 to October 26. There are two shower buildings, four double vault toilets and potable water spigots within the park boundaries. There is a sewer dump station located directly adjacent to the park boundary. AREA: The downstream campground is located along the Cotton wood tree lined Missouri River below the Fort Peck Dam and Reservoir. This 86 site campground offers a 10 site group camp area also. All sites have picnic tables and campfire grills. Both the Fort Peck Reservoir and Missouri River provide excellent fishing for Walleye, Saugers, Northern Pike, Rainbow and Lake Trout, and Salmon. The Whitetail Deer and upland bird hunting opportunities are world class. Come in spring or fall and listen to the skies come alive with the sounds of thousands of migratory birds. There are eleven recreation areas located around the Fort Peck Reservoir. Many of these areas have primitive sites with vault toilets, camp fire grills and picnic tables. Some of these sites have shade shelters and boat ramps.  The Fort Peck interpretive center and museum is also adjacent to Kiwanis Park and has displays that portray the history of the Fort Peck Dam and Reservoir, the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, the prehistoric dinosaurs found in the Hell Creek Geological Formation. The Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge surrounds the Reservoir with over 1.1 million acres of land, including the 245,000 acre Fort Peck Reservoir. Live plays are performed throughout the summer at the historic Fort Peck Theater. Temperatures in the summer range from highs in the 80’s and 90’s with a few days in the 100’s and lows at night in the 50’s and 60’s. Yearly precipitation is between 11-13 inches. The community of Fort Peck has a resident population of around 300 in the winter and 500 in the summer. The town has a post office, one hotel, and one motel/gas station/ tackle shop, three bar/restaurants, a recreation hall and a summer theater. One can find most amenities in the town of Glasgow which has a population of around 3,000 and lies 20 miles to the west of Fort Peck. Powerplant Tour Guide – Volunteers needed from March 2010 to June 2010 to conduct powerplant tours at Gavins Point Powerplant. Tour guides will become familiar with the general operation of the powerplant and lead school groups and public tours. Volunteer must be physically able to stand for extended periods of time and climb several flights of stairs. A campsite with water/sewer/electric hookups may be available.

Campground Host – Beginning April 2010 through October 2010. Multiple campground host positions for Cottonwood campground on the Missouri River. Position is located at major water resource project with heavy summer visitation. Length of term may vary. Position includes free pad with electricity. Number of Positions:  Three volunteer internships available- dates flexible May – August 2010

 

Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA.  The John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina.  Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities.  The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth and church groups.  The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public.

 

Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger.  Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna. Conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs.  Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs.  All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40.

 

Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages.  A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required.  Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field.  Must be at least 18 years of age and posses a valid driver’s license. 

 

Benefits: This position is a volunteer (unpaid) internship; however, under the Corps of Engineers’ Volunteer Agreement, you will receive some benefits:

The Corps of Engineers, Garrison Project in North Dakota is looking to fill volunteer this position for May 1, 2010 to September 2010. This Host position is for Wolf Creek Campground, which is located on the quiet shores of Lake Sakakawea. Wolf Creek is a primitive campground with 101 sites; however, the Campground Host is provided a site with full hook ups. Hosts should be outgoing, friendly, and enjoy working with people. We rely on our hosts to help us with visitor assistance, maintaining rules, and garbage pickup. Both 2.5 and 5 month positions are available.

We are looking to fill a volunteer Campground Host position for May 1, 2010 to September 2010. This host position is for Downstream Campground, which is a Class A campground and is located in a cottonwood forest along the beautiful Missouri River. Campground Host-
Volunteer Campground Hosts position available, May 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010, at Corps of Engineer’s, Beaver Creek Campground on Lake Oahe, 16 miles West of Linton, North Dakota. Hosts are requested to stay a minimum of two weeks.  Duties include visitor assistance such as supplying information and sport equipment to campers and day users, answering camper’s questions, calling 911 or the Emmons County Sheriff’s Office as needed. Safety hazards or issues need to be addressed immediately and reported to the Park Manager or Park Ranger. Daily lists of occupied sites with vehicle license plate numbers are recorded.  Monitor the campgrounds water system checking for leaks, reading pressure gauges and checking the chlorinator system. Volunteers will do a light cleaning of the comfort station on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of each week if needed or call the Park Manager if an additional contract cleaning is needed. Volunteers will not be paid for any services, mileage, incidentals, etc.  The volunteer hosts will stay on a full hookup site which includes a paved site partially shaded with trees, 30/50 amp electric service, water, sewage and close access to a public phone and possibly a phone line to the campsite.  Due to shifting earth and drought, water system failure is not uncommon.  Troubleshooting and repairs will be made as soon as the manpower or funds are available and the system is determined to be economically feasible to repair.  (Updated 08/27/2009)

Volunteers will answer questions, keep brochures stocked, and hand out relevant information such as maps. Volunteer may also staff an activity station related to nature or water safety.


Boundary Blitzers -
Strong nature lover's needed in October, November and December (weather permitting) to help mark and clear the park's boundary, weather permitting. Suitable for adults and possibly senior high students. Enjoy the outdoors in some of the more remote areas of the park. Even if you can't make these dates, call to help on other days.
Special Skills Needed:
Must be in good physical condition, be able to carry heavy equipment and walk long distances over uneven terrain.


Nest Box Monitor - Volunteers needed April  through August  to monitor Bluebird nest boxes and record nesting progress on data sheets on a weekly basis. Routes normally take approximately one hour to walk each week. Training for this position typically takes place in March. Other nesting or roosting boxes that are monitored and maintained on a yearly basis include squirrel den, wood duck and bat boxes.               
Butterfly Monitor
- Volunteers needed April  through October  to identify and record butterfly species on a weekly basis. Routes normally take one to two hours to walk each week, depending on which route is chosen. However, volunteers can also serve as substitutes or volunteer on a bi-weekly or monthly basis to give primary monitors a break. Couples and a home school family have volunteered in the past. This position would also be good for a team of high school students desiring a project in natural sciences that also provides data for the park. Natural Resource Volunteer Needed – March 01, 2010 to mid May 2010.  Resource Volunteers will assist Park Rangers, often independently, with: Invasive and Noxious Weed Removal, Monitoring and maintaining trails, Litter Removal,  Visitor Surveys, Posting Reserved Notices and Preparing Picnic Shelter, Assisting Ranger staff with Outreach Programs.  None of these tasks are intended to be the sole duties performed by the Resource Volunteers.

A vehicle will be provided on assigned work days. Job requires working in adverse weather conditions.  Job also requires that the Volunteer needs to meet certain physical standards to perform these tasks. Campground Host/Ranger Assistant Volunteers - Volunteers are needed mid April through mid October.  Positions are available at 3 campgrounds.

 Primary duties as campground hosts include greeting & assisting campers, providing surveillance of camping area, litter pickup, and assisting in the entrance booths during busy times.  Hosts will not collect money or confront violators, but will act as “eyes & ears” for the ranger staff.  Volunteers must be friendly and able to communicate effectively with the public. 

In addition to hosting, volunteers will assist the ranger & maintenance staffs as needed with other duties, such as fisheries & wildlife management projects, interpretive programs, maintenance work, counting fees, collecting water quality data, inspection & realignment of navigational buoys, day use area patrols, boat patrols, and conducting visitor surveys.  Volunteers must be in good health and capable of physical work in an outdoor environment.

While there is some flexibility, volunteers generally work a minimum of 30 hours/week, including holidays and weekends.  Days off are mid-week. 

A campsite is provided, plus reimbursement for certain expenses. Site amenities include full hookups (Outflow or Mill Run Campgrounds) or a site with electricity (Tub Run Campground).  Volunteers must provide their own camping equipment. 

Uniforms and all necessary safety equipment will be provided. 

Many outdoor recreation opportunities are available in this rural and beautiful corner of southwestern Pennsylvania, western Maryland, and northern West Virginia.  Most supplies can be obtained in the small town of Confluence, PA, or in larger towns within a 30 miles radius.( Updated 08/27/2009)

Wildlife and Forestry Management Volunteer - Volunteers will be assisting with natural resource management work on Thurmond Lake, GA/SC. Duties include: wildlife surveys for bald eagles, waterfowl, deer, and quail, prescribed fire, managed deer and turkey hunts, endangered species surveys, marking and cruising timber, data collection and maintenance using GPS and GIS, and water quality monitoring. The type of volunteer opportunities available vary with the season. The work can be physically demanding. Since much of the field work is done with Ranger personnel, volunteers are needed mainly on weekdays during normal business hours. Thurmond Lake is located approximately 25 miles from Augusta, GA. Numerous hunting and fishing opportunities are available. This volunteer position will provide college students with a variety of hands on experience in natural resources management. Tour guides will become familiar with the general operation of the powerplant and lead school groups and public tours. T&E Bird Survey Assistant – Volunteers needed from May 2010 to July 2010 to assist with nest searches and surveys of threatened piping plover and endangered Interior least tern on the Missouri River between Yankton, SD and Ponca, NE.  Volunteers must be outgoing, energetic, and professional.  This position includes riding in a boat from sandbar to sandbar, searching for birds, nests, chicks and recording data.  Spend your days working outdoors on this scenic section of the Missouri River, designated as the Missouri National Recreational River under the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act.  “NOTE:  This position is very physically demanding.  Workdays can last twelve hours (6am-6pm) and work is required in remote areas.  A worker may walk up to six miles per day across various sandbars in hot, humid conditions. “   A campsite with water/sewer/electric hookups may be available.

Cedar Creek Day Use Area Host- is currently looking for volunteers to staff the area for summer recreation season 2009. Butterfly Garden Volunteer(s)-Volunteer Work Period-Early May to Mid October

Job Description:  Volunteer(s) will be responsible for maintaining a brand new interpretive butterfly garden at the Walton Ferry Environmental Study Area at Old Hickory Lake. Park Host- Day Use Park Host Volunteers are needed at Hurricane Bridge Recreation Area located at Center Hill Lake.
Volunteers are needed from May 1, 2010 to September 1, 2010. Primary duties will include collection of use fees for boat launching at a busy recreation area, assist users of the Day Use Park by providing information on the area, the lake and policies including recreation use fee policies and procedures. Brochures, map , and other supplies will be provided by the Resource Manager. The volunteer will be expected to maintain and stock Honor Vault supplies, i.e. Day Use Fee Self Pay Envelopes and Permits, perform inspection of recreation area facilities and report items that need repair, operate the Entrance Station during schedule below. This will involve the sale of Day Use (Boat Launching) Permits, and Annual Day Use Passes. A full hook-up campsite will be provided.

Park Maintenance/ Visitor Center Assistance, Available from October 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010. The Canyon Lake Volunteer Program is expanding every year. There is a high demand to volunteer at this particular lake because of its location (being in South Texas) and its beauty. A "Volunteer Village" is created in October in one of the closed sections of Potter's Creek Park. This "village" gives the volunteers a sense of community and accommodates the volunteer with 30 and 50 amp hook-ups, water, their own restroom facility, and a dump station just around the corner. Also, there are a few (6) volunteer positions available at the seasonally-closed parks. All volunteers are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week in lieu of the camp site offered. Volunteers primary responsibilities are to provide park maintenance and up-keep at all the parks and visitor areas. Volunteer Interpreter-
We are currently looking for a volunteer to present interpretive programs for children and adults. Programs will be presented at campgrounds around Lake Whitney beginning in early April and ending in mid-August. Applicants must have knowledge of Texas flora and fauna, and a willingness to educate the public on environmental and natural topics. Volunteer will be expected to work 12-20 hours a week preparing and presenting programs, and providing information to the public in a campground setting. Volunteer may have assistance from the lake staff during presentations, but must be able to work independently, if necessary.
 

Park Host-Lake Whitney is looking for volunteers to serve as Park Hosts in campgrounds around the project. Duties will include assisting the public, litter removal, light maintenance, occasional restroom cleaning and stocking, and occasional mowing and trimming. We have a cleaning and mowing contract in place, but at times, volunteers may be needed to supplement the contracted cleanings and mowings. Volunteers may be provided with a vehicle to use in their duties, and other equipment such as mowers and cleaning supplies will be provided by the Corps. Work items include maintenance of existing boundary marking and fencing.  Replacing and reinstalling signs; Pipe gate and rail maintenance, painting, marking, documenting on GPS equipment.   Other work items to be performed will be on an as-needed basis and will be agreed upon between the volunteer and the Corps’ representative. The Corps will furnish a site at the park for a self-contained trailer or motor home with electrical (110 volts), water. Occupancy of this site is limited to volunteers’ camping unit and personal vehicles only.

Proctor Lake is in need of healthy, dependable individuals willing to donate 24 hours a week( this includes a free camp site with water, 30amp elect, and sewer) to help with the following projects:

1) Camp ground cleanup( debris from recent flooding, painting, landscaping) THIS IS A MAJOR NEED.

2) Equipment operation( weed eaters, pole saws etc.)

3) Small maintenance items( minor leaks, light bulbs, )

4) Office (clerical, phones, Public Relations) This position requires a high level of responsibility and professionalism.

5) 2 sets of Volunteers to live onsite in Promontory Park from 30 Sept. thru 1 April 2009 for winter watch of this seasonably closed park. This includes minor maintenance items as well as park cleanup (tree trimming, etc.)

Volunteers will sign for all equipment and supplies issued by the Corps of Engineers, and complete a time and project record sheet each month. About the Lake

Lake O’ the Pines is a multi-purpose lake project which is part of a comprehensive flood control plan for the Red River Basin. As part of this plan for flood control, the land and reservoir provide for other benefits which include recreation, fish & wildlife conservation and as a water supply for neighboring communities. Various species of mammals, reptiles and birds can be viewed by a watchful eye. The land consists primarily of rolling hills covered with pine & hardwoods. It is truly a sportsman’s paradise with world class fishing, hunting and camping.

 

Alley Creek Campground

Alley Creek Recreation Area is a highly developed multi-use park located on the north shore of Lake O’ the Pines, just off FM 729. The park provides 1 day-use facility with a swim beach, 1 group camping area and 80 overnight camp sites. There are 3 restroom facilities provided for the above areas. Each restroom has flush toilets, showers, and lavatories. In order to provide for visitor safety and enjoyment, day-use and camping facilities are located in different areas of the park. What Potential Volunteers Need to Know

All volunteers will be required to complete a background check, and a volunteer application. Each volunteer will be required to provide 12 (24 per couple) volunteer hrs per week. Volunteer applications will be evaluated based upon skills, abilities and the availability of positions. Position availability varies by season and the needs of the individual park. Campground Volunteer Positions

Duties will vary depending on the park, location, time of year and other unforeseen factors that may arise. Most common duties will include; campground beautification, basic landscaping and minimal visitor assistance. Volunteers will not be required to complete fee collection duties. The primary focus of these campground positions is to insure every visitor’s stay is a positive experience by improvement of the parks aesthetics. Volunteers will be required to complete duties with minimal supervisory oversight and duty hours will vary depending on weather and the needs of the park. Volunteers will primarily work independently, but will also work in a group setting as required for special projects or to assist other volunteers in the completion of various work items.

 

Project Office Volunteer Positions

Volunteers play a major role in greeting Lake O’ the Pines’ visiting public. Volunteers are needed to assist Project Office personal by providing visitor assistance, operation of phone systems, administrative support, and operation of basic office equipment. Volunteers wishing to be part of our office team will be required to complete 12 (24 per couple) volunteer hours on a set schedule between 8 am and 4:45 pm, M-F.

 

In Return, What We Provide…

In return for services, volunteers receive a full hook-up campsite (depending on location) which includes 50 amp electrical service, sewer and water. We will provide all equipment, materials and supplies needed to complete requested duties.

Number of Positions:  Three volunteer internships available- dates flexible May – August 2010

 

Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA.  The John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina.  Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities.  The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth and church groups.  The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public.

 

Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger.  Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna. Conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs.  Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs.  All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40.

 

Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages.  A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required.  Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field.  Must be at least 18 years of age and posses a valid driver’s license. 

 

Benefits: This position is a volunteer (unpaid) internship; however, under the Corps of Engineers’ Volunteer Agreement, you will receive some benefits:

The Park Hosts work under the supervision of the Mill Creek Natural Resources Management staff to support the management objectives in the operations and maintenance of Rooks Park.  All of the equipment needed to complete the host duties shall be provided by the Government, including a utility vehicle.
Host Duties:

Opening park gates and restroom facilities at 7:00 a.m. and closing them at sunset.  (Daily)

Litter collection of the entire park area by 9:00 a.m.  The irrigated lawn areas will need to be collected by 7:30 a.m. on days of contracted mowing.  (Daily)

    Monitor and regulate Rooks Park Pond.  (Daily)
(4)   
Playground, horseshoe pit, and volleyball court maintenance.  This includes leveling of the surface materials and inspecting the area for any hazards such as broken glass.  (Weekly)

Fire grills/rings maintenance.  This includes the removal of all material and ashes within the grills/rings.  (Weekly)

Drinking water quality testing.  This includes sampling, mixing a solution, and noting the test results.  (Daily)

Park Host Volunteer-
Levey Park is a day use facility that has a boat ramp, group shelters, picnic sites, and a swim beach. This park is not a fee site. This park is very popular on the weekends but is relatively quiet during the week. Since this is not a campground the host will be alone in the park from closing time to opening. The host is needed May 1 to September 13, 2010. The Park Host works under the Supervision of the Ice Harbor Dam Natural Resources Management staff to support the management objectives in the operation of Levey Park. Duties: Open gate and restroom facilities at 6:00 a.m. and close gate and restroom facilities at 10:00 p.m. (Daily) the host will be required to be on site Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays to monitor park and boat ramp activities and request Ranger assistance when needed. The host will also perform public relations, hand out water safety incentives, maintain bulletin boards, stock brochures, prepare group shelters for reserved groups, and keep life rings stocked at swim beach. A qualified host will be energetic, enjoys interacting with diverse groups of people, is reliable, and possess good communication skills. The host will be provided with all the equipment needed to perform the duties requested. A volunteer uniform consisting of a polo shirt or vest, a baseball cap, and a name tag will also be supplied.  Visitor Center Host - Two couples are needed Memorial Day weekend 2010 through Labor Day weekend to work at Ice Harbor Dam Visitor Center. The volunteers will provide information and courtesy services to visitors, stock and inventory brochures, give informal tours, and assist Rangers with special events. A qualified couple would be energetic, have good communication and organization skills, enjoy assisting and visiting with people. A free full-hook up RV site with 30 amp service at Charbonneau Campground will be provided to each couple during their work period. Archivist - An individual with a keen since of organization and love of history to organize a collection of 35mm slides and photographs. Ice Harbor Lock and Dam in Burbank, WA has a large collection of historical 35mm slides and photographs that need to be archived. These pictures contain the history of Ice Harbor Lock and Dam Project ranging from its construction, the inner workings of the turbines, the recreational areas, the wildlife areas, as well as the folks who have come and gone and left their imprint on the area. Time is passing and these records of history are fading away. Someone who is familiar with scanners and computers would be an asset but we are willing to train. (Updated 08/27/2009)

Park Maintenance- Blackhawk Park is looking for a long term (2-5 months) park maintenance volunteer(s) to perform light duty maintenance in the park from May to September 2010. We are looking for energetic applicants that would like to work in a campground setting located on the Mississippi River main channel 30 miles south of La Crosse, WI. Work can include painting, minor repairs and assisting other maintenance staff. We require volunteers to work 24-30 hours per week per person in exchange for a site with FHU including 20/30/50 amp service. No weekend work and a stipend may be available depending on budget. Volunteer Campground Host: Site located in Highland Ridge Campground, Spring Valley, WI
2010- May, August, September Start/End Dates: Volunteer campground hosts are scheduled on a month by month basis, although corresponding months can be grouped together if applicable (e.g. August/Sept).  Main duties consist of: informing the public on rules and regulations, answering visitor questions, posting reservations and selling firewood and ice.  We don't have an official number of hours worked per week, but expect hosts to be on-site everyday for at least (4) hrs, unless advanced oral permission is obtained from Lead Ranger. Amenities provided: DSL line, phone line, and free site with full hook-ups, picnic table, and fire ring and lantern post.

 

Volunteer/Maintenance Host Position: Site is located at Eau Galle Project Office Compound 2010- May, June, July, August, September, possibly October

The Volunteer/Maintenance Position's duties include, but are not limited to: small maintenance projects, paddle boat rentals, painting, watering trees, mowing, etc.

Conduct periodic walk through/drive through of park to assure campers are on assigned sites according to records. Campground hosts do not enforce park regulations; however, they are the eyes and ears of the park rangers and assist rangers and visitors during emergencies.  Campground hosts may on rare occasions be required to assist with traffic control within the campground. Bulltown Campground is one of area’s most popular campgrounds, and the host provides a very valuable service. This campground is located 12 miles off Exit 67, Interstate 79.  In exchange for the services, campground hosts are provided a RV site with water, sewage, and electric at the entrance to the campground.

Riffle Run Campground – Campground Host – mid-April through fall – Greet visitors and answer questions about the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) and other programs.  Ensure campground entrance gate opens in the morning and is secure at night. Since the host is bonded, this will be a long-term assignment (from mid-May through the end of September).  Host may also be responsible for posting reserved sites daily if it is decided to enter this campground in NRRS.  Campground hosts do not enforce park regulations; however, they are the eyes and ears of the park rangers and assist rangers and visitors during emergencies.  Riffle Run Campground is one of area’s most popular campgrounds, and the host provides a very valuable service.  This campground is located 3 miles off Exit 79, Interstate 79.  In exchange for the services, campground hosts are provided a RV site with water, sewage, and electric at the entrance to the campground.

Bulltown Day-Use Area – Day-Use Area Host – mid-May through Labor Day – monitor visitors to and assist park rangers to see that rules and regulations are obeyed.  Burnsville Lake, Bulltown Day-Use Area is approximately 12 miles from Interstate 79, Exit 67.  Volunteer will be provided with a campsite with full hookups (no telephone).  The host will have two major duties:  visitor assistance and facility maintenance. As an important part of the visitor assistance program, the volunteer will welcome visitors, and provide literature, brochures, and general information on facilities, fees, rules and regulations, etc.  Monitor the boat launch ramp, informing users of the boat ramp launch fee.  The volunteer will monitor park activities and will contact a park ranger if a problem is observed. Facility maintenance will include cleaning the restroom near Shelter 5, the grounds in the picnic area, and Shelters 5 and 6.  Duties include insuring that supplies are kept stocked in the restroom.  Other duties will include roadside litter pickup, cleaning the grills, emptying trash cans, and planting, watering, and maintaining flowerbeds. The host shall clean shelters by 9:00 a.m., shall clean the restroom by 10:00 a.m., and shall collect litter in the entire park area by 11:00 a.m. (daily).  The playground and horseshoe pits shall be maintained, including leveling of the surface materials and inspecting the area for any hazards such as broken glass (weekly).  Grills shall be maintained, including removal of all material and ashes within the grills/rings (weekly).  Garbage shall be collected from trash receptacles and the liners shall be replaced as necessary (at least weekly).  The “Reserved” signs shall be posted before 9:00 a.m. on days of reservations, and the signs shall be replaced at the end of the day (as needed).  Volunteers will be provided with all required administrative supplies, a radio, cleaning supplies, and any other necessary tools.  Hosts must provide their own Recreational Vehicle (RV) and should have a pickup or similar vehicle for hauling trash.  They must have the ability to effectively communicate with the public and must be capable of physical work duties in an outdoor environment.  A set schedule must be maintained, and the host must be willing to commit to a long term agreement.  The host must wear the prescribed host uniform (vest with nametag and patch) while performing duties and must have the ability to utilize radio equipment in a professional manner.  Volunteer periods for a shorter length of time than shown above will be considered although 60 days is considered a minimum.

Bulltown Historic Area Visitor Center Volunteer/Interpreter – Positions are available between May 15 and October 15 at Bulltown Historic Area Visitor Center (12 miles off Interstate 79, Exit 67).  Greet and assist visitors upon their arrival.  Provide visitors brochures, and explain interpretive displays and programs available to them.  Answer phones and messages in a timely manner.  Track visitation and compile monthly data.  Operate videos and slide show in theater upon request.  Keep brochure rack in lobby properly filled with supplied brochures.  Provide programs such as campfire programs, historic area tours, living history demonstrations, and talks to visitors, campers, and local residents. Program topics include natural resources, safety, and cultural and natural history.  Plant, water and weed flower beds around visitor center. Assist park rangers with other activities as needed.  Other duties will include light cleaning duties in the visitor center, trash pickup in the parking lot and area adjacent to the visitor center, and limited security of the visitor center.  Campsite with electric hookup is available.  Volunteer will receive one night of camping for each four hours of service performed.

All Areas – Facility Maintenance Volunteer – Positions are available mid-April through fall.  Volunteers will perform various light duty maintenance work to include: painting, staining; light carpentry work (repair/replace rotted or damaged boards on tables, fences, etc.); replace screens in park restrooms and shower facilities; plant and water flowers and weed flowerbeds; plant and prune trees and shrubs; pick up litter throughout the project and debris along the shoreline; mow and maintain nature trails; clean grills; maintain bulletin boards; and other light maintenance duties.  Volunteers are required to provide 20 hours per week service in exchange for a free campsite with electric hookup.

Light Maintenance/Visitor Center Host/Fee Station Attendant - Mid April through Early September.  We are seeking volunteers willing to perform light maintenance from mid-April through late May, and then act as visitor center hosts and fee collectors at our swim area from late May through early September.   Examples of maintenance duties include grass mowing and trimming, painting, landscaping, sign maintenance, trail maintenance, and de-winterizing facilities. Special projects, less routine in nature, may also be available.

 

Visitor Center Host/Fee Station Attendant - Late May through Early September.  As an alternative to the above, we may be willing to select volunteers willing to work from late May thru early September as fee station attendants and visitor center hosts.

 

Light Duty Maintenance Volunteer -  Mid-April through Early October. Examples of duties include grass mowing and trimming, painting, landscaping, sign maintenance, trail maintenance, and de-winterizing facilities.  Special projects, less routine in nature, may also be available.
 

Volunteers camp for free on sites featuring concrete pads; plus water, sewage, and 50 amp electric hookups. East Lynn Lake in East Lynn, West Virginia has available Campground Host positions which require the volunteer(s) to live in the recreation area and perform the duties to operate a campground or day use recreation area. It is our goal to provide a family oriented camping experience by personally greeting East Lynn Lake visitors in a friendly and courteous manner, and, to promote the safe, responsible use of project facilities and resources, while providing high quality customer service and information.

The volunteer(s) will welcome visitors, and provide literature, brochures, and general information on facilities, fees, rules and regulations and the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS), Conduct periodic walk through/drive through of park to assure campers are on assigned sites according to records. The volunteer will monitor park activities and will contact a park ranger if a problem is observed; the host must have the ability to utilize radio equipment in a professional manner. 

Volunteers must be capable of physical work duties in an outdoor environment and will be needed to perform light maintenance duties which may include restroom cleanings;  light carpentry work, painting, staining; grass mowing, trimming, and landscaping; litter pick up throughout the project and debris along the shoreline; maintain nature trails; and other light maintenance duties.  

Work shifts are generally 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and may include evening and/or nighttime hours, split shifts, and will almost always include weekends and holidays. Visitor Center Host - This volunteer is needed Memorial Day weekend through Labor day weekend. The visitor information center is a small facility with light to moderate visitation. Volunteer may be asked to assist with tours of the dam that are scheduled for Thursday during June, July and August. The Corps of Engineers does not operate a campground at Tygart Lake, so a free campsite will not be provided. Bakers Run Campground-Campground Host-Sutton Lake has campground host positions available  May 1, 2010 to October 30, 2010, which require the volunteer's to live in the campground and perform the duties of meeting and greeting campers, assisting Park Rangers and Park Attendants with periodic campground checks and maintaining the overall aesthetics of  the campground (Some litter pick-up, etc.) In addition, volunteers will monitor campground activities and contact a Park Ranger or Park Attendants if problems are observed. Host must posses a friendly and courteous manner and be available to assist campers by providing information and handing out materials.  Two - Three months duration.

 

All Areas – Facility/Grounds Maintenance Volunteer – positions are available May 1, 2010 to November 30, 2010.  Volunteers will perform various light duty maintenance work to include: Assist with spring clean-up, cleaning facilities, litter pick-up, painting, staining; light carpentry, mowing and maintaining campground areas, conducting comment card surveys, pick up litter throughout the project and debris along the shoreline; clean grills; maintain bulletin boards; and other light maintenance duties.  Volunteers are required to provide 20 hours per week service in exchange for a free campsite with electric hookup.

Campground Host-Volunteer campground host position available at Robert W. Craig Campground from May 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010.
As a volunteer campground host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out comment cards; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and patrol the campground; stock restrooms, and minimal record keeping. A host must generally be physically able to perform some minor trail work, painting, trimming shrubbery and trees, and other light maintenance assigned by the rangers. A host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. The host may also be called upon to present Saturday evening programs to the campers, weather permitting.

Open Shaw Beach as scheduled and perform daily checklist tasks when assigned serve as a beach visitor host when requested

You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. The work week will generally consist of 20 hours/week/volunteer. Day Use Area Host: Volunteers are needed May 1 to September 30 to provide both the following services:

Visitor Assistance – Monitor park activities and provide information to visitors.  Distribute comment cards, maps and information brochures to park visitors. Note violations of park rules, accidents and injuries and report them to the Resource Manager promptly. Post RESERVED sign on picnic shelter as needed. Volunteer must be cordial, friendly and willing to assist park visitors.

 

Housekeeping – Clean the restroom twice daily on weekends/holidays and once daily on weekdays. Perform minor maintenance to fixtures and hardware as needed and promptly report maintenance deficiencies to park officials. Volunteer will be provided cleaning supplies, tools, cleaning schedule and admin supplies. Morning cleanings will be competed by 10:00am. Evening cleanings will be performed after 4:00pm. Host must be able to work safely and independent of immediate oversight.
The Downstream Area 1 Day Use Area is located directly below Bluestone Dam along the New River near Hinton West Virginia.  The area is frequented heavily by fishermen and Little League baseball participants.
