NR 16-016: Powerhouse tour July 16 at Cordell Hull Dam

Cordell Hull Dam is offering free public tours of the powerhouse 9 a.m. Saturday, May 20, and 9 a.m. June 17, 2017.  Guiding guests through the facilities, Corps of Engineers personnel and volunteers will provide information about Cordell Hull Lake’s unique history, project purposes, recreational opportunities, fish and wildlife benefits, as well as, an up-close look of the dam and powerhouse facilities.

CARTHAGE, Tenn. (June 21, 2016) – Cordell Hull Dam is offering a free public tour of the powerhouse 9 a.m. Saturday, July 16.  It’s the last public tour of the 2016 recreation season.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Cordell Hull Dam is located at river mile 313.5, about five miles upstream of Carthage, Tenn.  Rising 87 feet above the streambed, the combination earth fill and concrete-gravity dam is 1,306 feet long with a hydroelectric power generating plant. The plant has three 100,000 kilowatt hydropower units that produce approximately 350,000,000 kilowatts annually.

Approximately 45 minutes in length, the tour will begin at the Resource Manager’s Office. After guest check in and a brief introduction, guests will walk to the powerhouse. Guiding guests through the facilities, Corps of Engineers personnel and volunteers will provide information about Cordell Hull Lake’s unique history, project purposes, recreational opportunities, fish and wildlife benefits, as well as, an up-close look of the dam and powerhouse facilities.
