Release no. 13-022

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 17, 2013) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is unable to offer extended operating hours at Old Hickory Lock on Independence Day because of sequestration.

Old Hickory Lock hours of operation are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. On July 4 the lock will adhere to its normal closing time of 10 p.m.  No lockage of a vessel can begin if completion of the lockage will extend beyond the normal hours of operation.  This means the latest that boats will be allowed into the lock chamber is 9:15 p.m.  Commercial barge vessels have priority over recreational vessels and will be locked first.

Historically, the Nashville District utilized overtime labor to accommodate lockage of vessels outside these normal business hours on Independence Day.  Due to sequestration and related guidance, overtime operations have been reduced to emergency-only situations.  Therefore, lockage of vessels outside these established normal operating hours has been restricted. A previous news release provided information about navigation lock hours of operation at navigation locks all along the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers.

The Corps regrets it cannot support extended hours, but suggests that recreational boaters consider using boat ramps downstream of Old Hickory Dam to avoid having to use the lock and to enjoy the Independence Day events at their own leisure.  Here is a list of boat ramps available to the public:
