    Hydropower Optimization increases energy production at Corps plants

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 18, 2015) - Aging hydroelectric generating units operated by the district at Dams in Kentucky and Tennessee have gone well beyond their typical design life of 35-40 years and are in much need of rehabilitation. Engineers at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District are focused on a plan to revitalize and rehabilitate the units in the next 20 years.

    Lake Cumberland marina earns ‘clean marina’ flag

    NASHVILLE, TENN., (Sept. 14, 2015) – With the sound of marine boat motors in the background, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District presented a ‘Clean Marina’ certification flag to a Lake Cumberland marina during a brief ceremony Sept. 10, 2015. Conley Bottom Resort in Monticello, Ky., became the first marina on Lake Cumberland to earn the distinguished certification.

    Students connect with Corps emergency managers on Patriot Day

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 11, 2015) – Students at Stratford STEM Magnet High School can’t recall where they were when the towers of the World Trade Center fell on 9-11; they were just babies, toddlers or not even born yet. Fourteen years later they spent Patriot Day touring a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Emergency Command and Control Vehicle and learning about that fateful day from a Corps member who deployed to Pier 90 in Manhattan, N.Y., in the wake of the attack.

    Corps begins hydropower rehabilitation at Center Hill Dam

    LANCASTER, Tenn. (Sept. 9, 2015) – Disassembly of hydropower unit two is about to get underway at Center Hill Dam, which is the first of 28 units in the Cumberland River Basin to be rehabilitated as a result of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Southeastern Power Administration and power customers signed in August 2011 that provided a funding stream for the work.

    Jim Graham, electrical engineer in the Engineering Division Civil Design Branch, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Employee of the Month for June 2015. He is recognized for his significant contributions and demonstrated professionalism, innovation and electrical engineering expertise in support of the control programming and startup of the Olmsted Lock on the Ohio River in the Louisville District.

    CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 19, 2015) – The Mississippi River Commission, several Corps of Engineers generals, and local stakeholders paused a meeting onboard the Motor Vessel Mississippi Aug. 11 for the presentation of a length of service award to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District deputy for Programs and Project Management.

(Aug. 14, 2015) – The Mississippi River Commission recently navigated the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers to gain a fresh perspective for the development of plans to improve the condition of the Mississippi River Basin, foster navigation, promote commerce, and reduce flood risk.

    Forum empowers Corps of Engineers

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 13, 2015) – Personnel from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, Tennessee Valley Authority, floodplain administrators, community leaders, and technical professionals from throughout Tennessee attended the 6th Annual Tennessee Association of Floodplain Managers Conference in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Aug. 11-14, 2015.

    Summer ranger proves to be great asset at Center Hill Lake

    LANCASTER, Tenn. (Aug. 6, 2015) – Each summer Corps of Engineers park rangers go into overdrive with boat patrols, programs and events, supervision of recreation areas, shoreline management, and overall assistance to lake visitors. The many responsibilities can be overwhelming, but this year the load is lightened at Center Hill Lake thanks to the outstanding work of a summer ranger.

    Air Force NCO moves up the ranks in the Nashville District

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 29, 2015) – An Air Force Reserve non-commissioned officer assigned to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District was recently promoted in a ceremony attended by district employees.
  • Danny Tanner, a lock and dam equipment mechanic assigned to the Cumberland River Operations Center in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District, welds the lower gate July 27, 2015 at Old Hickory Lock in Old Hickory, Tenn. The lock is empty of water until Aug. 4, 2015 while maintenance crews inspect the lock chamber and perform scheduled maintenance. The lock is located on the Cumberland River at mile 216.2.

    OLD HICKORY, Tenn. (July 27, 2015) – Old Hickory Lock holds 19 million gallons of water when fully operational; however, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District recently closed it to navigation and drained it for scheduled repairs.

    Sweet partnership with McDonalds treats kids who play it safe

    DEFEATED, Tenn. (July 14, 2015) – When park rangers witness young people practicing good safety at Cordell Hull Lake this summer, they might just reward them for their efforts thanks to a sweet partnership with McDonalds.

Burney, a budget analyst in the Operations Division, was posthumously awarded the Superior Civilian Service Award, a United States flag, flown over the U.S. Capitol, and recognized for forty years of government service during a ceremony at the district June, 9, 2015. Burney passed away Feb. 1, 2015.

    Corps prepares future engineering students at Summer Engineering Program

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 26, 2015) –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District collaborated with the Tennessee State University College of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science Department to mentor science, technology, engineering and math students involved in a four-week National Summer Transportation Institute program on the campus of TSU June 22 through July 3.

    Murphy becomes 64th commander of Nashville District

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 16, 2015) – Lt. Col. Stephen F. Murphy took command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District during a change of command ceremony today at the Tennessee National Guard Armory. He becomes the 64th commander in the district’s 127 year history.

It will reflect real world situations a student might encounter in as a science or engineering professional.
