    International team visits Tennessee for water development initiative

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 17, 2019) – An international team from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam visited the Tennessee and Cumberland River Systems last week at the invitation of the United States in support of water development in the Lower Mekong River Basin.

    Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project builds on Joint Risk Register

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 26, 2019) – As Corps of Engineers officials and their contract partner prepare to place concrete for a new navigation lock at Chickamauga Dam on the Tennessee River, they are actively working together to reduce safety risk as well as construction risks that could affect contract costs and schedule, and identify opportunities for improvement as part of a headquarters pilot program called the “Joint Risk Register.”

    General recognizes security officer wounded in Iraq IED attack

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 8, 2019) – Ejected from his turret position in an F350 truck, laying on the ground critically injured in Iraq nearly 12 years ago, Billy Johnson remembers saying an “Our Father,” not fearing death. Today he stood full of life in front of family, friends and his priest, thankful for their love and support as he received the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Defense of Freedom during a ceremony hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Tennessee Valley Authority Central Labs near Chickamauga Lock.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District and its contractor partner Johnson Brothers put a 1.3 million pound concrete shell into position Aug. 6, 2018 on the riverbed on downstream end of Kentucky Lock where it will be part of a coffer dam and eventually a permanent part of the new lock wall for the Kentucky Lock Addition Project.     GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (Aug. 9, 2018) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District successfully placed the first 1.3 million pound concrete shell on the riverbed Aug. 6 that will be part of the downstream cofferdam and the permanent lock wall for the Kentucky Lock Addition Project.

    Coast Guard admiral tours Chickamauga Lock

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (May 4, 2018) – The U.S. Coast Guard’s incoming assistant commandant toured Chickamauga Lock today to see where physical expansion of concrete causes structural deficiencies, and observe how ongoing excavation of the riverbed is making way for construction of a new navigation lock to improve access to the upper reaches of the Tennessee River Basin.

    Nashville District celebrating its 130th Anniversary in 2018

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2018) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is celebrating its 130th anniversary in 2018. The Nashville District formed from the Chattanooga District to construct a series of locks and dams on the Cumberland River. Army Special Order 191 created the district Aug. 18, 1888, and Lt. Col. John W. Barlow took command.
