    Employees overcome winter storms to keep river projects operating

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 12, 2015) – Snow and ice blanketed the Cumberland and Tennessee River basins twice over the past month, which severely hampered travel in rural areas. Despite winter’s effect on transportation, it did not prevent a handful of very dedicated Corps of Engineers employees from going above and beyond to keep hydropower plants operating and navigation locks open for the movement of commerce.

    Hydropower model tests generate positive results for Center Hill rehab project

    YORK, Pa. (Oct. 10, 2014) – Corps experts witnessed a series of tests this week on a “small-scale” turbine model in a laboratory at Voith Hydro Inc. The tests were completely successful and the positive results will keep the Center Hill Hydropower Rehabilitation Project schedule on track.

    Kentucky Lock team receives Nashville District’s Hedgehog Award

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A construction team at the Kentucky Lock Addition Project, which stepped up to manage the repair of a hydropower unit at Barkley Power Plant, received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Hedgehog Award Feb. 11 at the district’s headquarters.

The $11.5 million, major repair project began Aug. 15, 2012 when contractor employees lifted the 270-ton assembly by crane and placed it on a nearby pedestal for repair by National Electric Coil from Columbus, Ohio. Unit 1 was placed back on line Nov. 18, 2013.

    KUTTAWA, Ky., (Dec. 6, 2013) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Barkley Hydropower Plant Unit 1 here is back in operation after a phase-to-ground fault caused a fire that damaged the 32.5 Megawatt generator stator windings in Dec. 19, 2010.

    Carolyn Bauer, a former Lake Cumberland park ranger who recently retired from the Corps in March with 35 years of service, talks March 13, 2013 as an honorary display wall is unveiled to commemorate the service of park rangers at the Lake Cumberland Visitor's Center. She called Wallace Halcomb, who was honored, a great teacher, a mentor and a fun-loving family man.     Corps hosts University of Tennessee Martin students at Lake Barkley

    KUTTAWA, Ky. (Feb. 28, 2013) – U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, Nashville District employees at the Lake Barkley Resource Center, Lock and Dam hosted Students and faculty from the University of Tennessee at Martin Hydrology and Hydraulics class for a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math tour today.
  • This is Dale Hollow Dam Feb. 26, 2013. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District electricians at Dale Hollow Dam on the Obey river are working on a Sustainability Program Initiative project to replace the contracted local utility power source to the resource managers office, maintenance shops, and transient quarters with direct power from the Dale Hollow Power House.     Dale Hollow Dam plugs into its own power source

    CELINA, Tenn. (Feb. 26, 2013) – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District electricians at Dale Hollow Dam on the Obey River are plugging into the dam’s power source as part of a sustainability program initiative.

    Barkley hydropower rehabilitation gets a 270-ton lift

    KUTTAWA, Ky. (Aug. 16, 2012) – Work crews here at Barkley Power Plant removed a 270-ton rotor assembly today from a crippled hydropower unit damaged 18 months ago by an electrical fire. The heavy lift enables the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District to move forward with the generator’s rehabilitation.
