Published Oct. 6, 2011

GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (Oct. 6, 2011) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District awarded an $8,698,348 contract Sept. 30 to National Electric Coil in Columbus, Ohio for the Barkley Dam Unit 1 Rewind Project at the hydropower plant.

The project involves the rewinding of the 45-year-old Unit 1 generator at the Lake Barkley Power Plant. The 18-month rewind contract will begin in November 2011, and when completed will return all four units to full production.

Wayne Huddleston, project manager, said "the Unit 1 failure occurred in December 2010 from an electrical ground fault, and work to complete plans and specifications to make the award was expedited to get the generator back on line."

The Barkley Power Plant started operation in early 1966 when the first of its four units were placed on line. Each of Barkley’s four generators is capable of producing 32,500-kilowatt hours.
