BRISTOL, Tenn. (Oct. 6, 2011) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District awarded a $738,536 contract Sept. 27 to Aspen Construction, a Hackensack, Minn., company, for the Beaver Creek Flood Damage Reduction Project here.

The work includes a demolition of an existing two-barreled concrete culvert; streambank side slope improvements, including riprap placement; construction of new concrete wing walls; construction of a new modular block retaining wall; site grading and drainage; construction of asphalt parking lot, concrete plaza, sidewalks, and installation of decorative metal railings, site furnishings and electrical lighting fixtures; installation of irrigation system; landscaping and tree planting.

"This is the first phase of the four-phase project," said Ramune Morales, project manager for the Beaver Creek Flood Damage Reduction Project. "It will contribute to reducing flood risk in the downtown area and will also greatly improve the site by opening up the now hidden Beaver Creek and creating a park-like setting for the city residents' enjoyment."

This project is downstream of Beaver Creek Dam, a Tennessee Valley Authority Project, which is located in southwest Virginia and built in the 1960s to provide flood protection and recreation or the cities of Bristol, Tenn., and Bristol, Va. It is a flood detention dam, which collects and holds back water runoff during heavy rains. It does not hold a permanent reservoir pool.
