GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (May 23, 2012) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District responded to a Tennessee Valley Authority request today to ramp up its hydro power generation at the Lake Barkley Dam Power House.
From about 2 to 3:30 p.m. the Corps increased power generation capacity from one unit at 20 megawatts, releasing 6,000 cubic feet per second, to two units at 64 megawatts, releasing 16,200 cfs.
TVA load coordinators requested the increase in generation when a utility pole caught fire and crews had to replace it to protect several nearby transmission lines. The Kentucky Dam Power House also increased generation in response to the situation, TVA officials said.
The Nashville District Navigation Branch notified boats on the lower Cumberland River and dock facilities of the temporary change in releases.
“We responded quickly to generate additional power and support TVA during the repairs,” said Lt. Col. James A. DeLapp, Nashville District commander. “This is a great example of how the Corps and TVA routinely partner together to operate and maintain the power requirements of the region.”
