Published Aug. 9, 2012

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. (Aug. 9, 2012) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is offering the public free guided tours of the Old Hickory Navigation Lock. These are the first public tours of the lock since visitation was restricted after Sept. 11, 2001.

Approximately 45 minutes in length, tours are scheduled for Saturday Aug. 25 and Sep. 8 with tours beginning at 12 noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.

Tour size is limited and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.  All guests including minors are required to submit a request form at least five business days prior to the tour and receive confirmation from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District.

Old Hickory Lake Resource Manager Jeff Orten said it is the Nashville District’s mission to unlock the story of the Old Hickory Navigation Lock and its many benefits to the nation.  “Guided access will be provided onto the lock wall where participants can view the navigation facilities and gain an understanding of how the navigation lock operates and the importance of river navigation to the community and the nation,” said Orten.

Registered tour participants will be required to check in at the parking lot located on the dam adjacent to the lock approximately 15 minutes prior to the designated tour time where they will receive a brief introduction prior to beginning the tour.

To request a tour registration form and to learn more about the tours’ rules and details, please call the Old Hickory Lake Resource Manager’s Office at (615) 822-4846.

The Old Hickory Navigation Lock is located at 1188 Cinder Road, Old Hickory, TN  37138. (Note: Old Hickory side of dam, not Hendersonville side)
