NR 12-031: Kendall, Waitsboro campgrounds set for early closure

Published Aug. 10, 2012

SOMERSET, Ky. (Aug. 10, 2012) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is closing Kendall and Waitsboro campgrounds at Lake Cumberland earlier than scheduled in 2012 due to internal roadway repairs.

Kendall Campground is closing Nov. 4, 2012.  Its anticipated reopen date is March 15, 2013.  Waitsboro Campground is closing Sept. 9, 2012.  Its anticipated reopen date is April 5, 2013.

Roadways in both campgrounds were damaged during the flood events of May 2010.  The Federal Highways Administration worked on the project plans and designs, and is overseeing the vast majority of repairs. The repairs are not expected to interfere with the 2013 recreation season.

“We understand how these closures will negatively affect a number of our fall season campers.  We regret the inconvenience, and have made every attempt to impact as few visitors as possible,” said Brett Call, natural resource manager at Lake Cumberland.

“We want to thank you for your patience and understanding during this time,” Call said.  “These much needed road repairs will ensure better service for our current and future users of the affected campgrounds.”
